Mourning and Loss

This year, so far, has been a difficult one for many of us. Politics and our activism aside (or as far aside as we can place something so close to our hearts, so innate to who we are), it's not quite the end of the first quarter, and already there have been losses in my family, and in the families of my friend-family. These losses, these deaths, have come with, and without, warning. Some of my friends are in their own watches, waiting for someone they love and adore to pass from life-- knowing it could be tomorrow, or it could be months from now, but wait they do. Some of us already said good bye, and are dealing with the aftermath that this tsunami of grief has created in our lives. No More Pink Ribbons

**Edited to add a link to SGK corporate sponsors.** For many years I have had a small list of "pet charities".; you know, groups and charities I send money to every year. Even if I can only send 5 or 10 bucks each, every one of them got a money order, a cheque or an online debit payment. I never made a big deal out of it-- I mean, who does, right? You send in your pennies, and I send in my pennies, and soon our pennies add up to dollars that can really help. At least, that's the idea. Monday, the 20th of January the Susan G Komen Foundation * announced they would no longer partner with Planned Parenthood in order to help provide breast cancer screenings to poor and uninsured women. They claim it's not about abortion, per se but because they did some rule clean up, and now, suddenly, can't possibly give money or grants to groups that are <gasp> under investigation! The Predator's Smile

While I grew up with a television centric family, I’ve gradually stopped watching it, and for about the last 15-20 years I’ve only kept a peripheral eye on it. I love cartoons, and good movies, but I just can’t sit still for them anymore. It’s not like I have to be moving, moving, but I just get bored sitting there, staring, and find myself picking up a book. I used to do that when I was a kid, and into my 20’s too. If the television was on, the volume was low, and it was background noise while I read, or played a pc game, or did something else. I’ve always been bad about remembering when a show was on, even the ones I like, and so I tend to miss a lot of pop culture. I always shrugged it off, and figured that as long as I watched the news, I was ok. I might have missed some references, but I didn’t miss them.
