Meandering thoughts: more persecution ramblings

Today on CNN I saw a blog in their Belief section: My Take: A word to Christians- Be nice . The writer, a pastor in Prescott AZ writes about his dismay at his fellow christians and their often, very vocal hate filled Tweets, blogs, comments etc. He has written in the past about christians general bad reputation here in the States, and he didn't shy away admitting that the biggest reason christians are called hateful is because a lot of them are loudly hateful! Not because they're being persecuted, or because the media has a bias against them, but because they're setting out to shove their busy-body noses into the lives of others, and scream hateful things when we disagree. The crux of his piece sums up his arguments really nicely: More and more, I see hateful Christians chalking up their disrepute to “persecution.” God tells us otherwise. In 1 Peter 4 we’re told, “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed. …” And that’s the truth; sometimes w...

Anatomy lessons are obviously needed... stat!

Trigger Warning: This blog discusses the very public comment of an Alabama state representative and her anti-choice stance. I will am focused more on her lack of knowledge, but the snark, sarcasm and general profanity levels will be high. I have always tried to call out ignorance when I see it, and this my Dear Readers is totally chosen ignorance. If you'd rather not read such things, or have GOP-stupidity syndrome fatigue [and I can't blame you one iota for that one!] you may want to skip this one. Actually said, in public, aloud, on the Feb. 14, and quoted in the Montgomery Advertiser :* “When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body,” ... “That’s a big thing. That’s a big surgery. You don’t have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.” I'll bet you had no idea that a foetus was an organ, let alone an embryo . I'm pretty educated in anatomy, and I don't remember learning that bit of information, mysel...

Unaffiliated

Trigger Warning: Snark ahead. Lots and lots of it. In fact, this entire entry will be chock-full of all of your daily allowances of snarky, sarcastic wit for the next month. Oh, and it's about religion in America... so yeah, you've been warned! So, today Pew released their newest religion poll. It's amazing! It's New! It's Improved! We can hardly believe it! Yes, for the fourth, or fifth time this year, another poll has come out that tells us what we already know: One in Five Americans is religiously unaffiliated... Now, my husband sent me the CNN link this morning from work. The Slate link, I found myself, as I read news there, too. I was already familiar with the 20% number, because I distinctly remember reading this before-- not that long ago. Where? I can't remember, but I do remember the "1 in 5" and thinking, "huh, that many?" I want to explore that, though, just a little. What does unaffiliated mean, and why is it really such...

Naughty Words

Image
No, this blog isn't about profanity, or words that cause offence to the listener. This blog isn't about whether fuck, cunt, asshole, prick or cocksucker are even insulting, or profane.* I don't really care if you think fuck is worse then asshole, but not as bad as cunt. I never did understand the accepted hierarchy of curse words, to be honest. I don't think fuck is a bad word at all, it's a perfectly good word-- so is cunt-- it's how you use the word that can be mean, or expressive. click to enlarge No, today I've finally gotten around to writing about this list of words I found on Alternet . It's a list of words that the government keeps an eye out for, online,-- you know, Patriot act, and terrorism and all. Reading this list made me want to compose a poem, maybe sonnet style, using these words.I never did get up the initiative , but here's a rambling look into my facilities . Take a good look at this list. Just the first section: Domestic ...

Privacy: what's so damned hard about it?

Trigger Warning: I'm going to rant a bit about the right to privacy today. I get a little profane, and I mock the shit out of evangelical/fundamental Christianity. If this bothers you, skip this one. It also meanders a bit and touches on equal protection under the law-- something that often goes hand in hand with the right to privacy. "Although not explicity [sic] stated in the text of the Constitution, in 1890 then to be Justice Louis Brandeis extolled ' a right to be left alone. ' This right has developed into a liberty of personal autonomy protected by the 14th amendment. The 1st , 4th , and 5th Amendments also provide some protection of privacy, although in all cases the right is narrowly defined. The Constitutional right of privacy has developed alongside a statutory right of privacy which limits access to personal information." Cornell University Law School 's page on Privacy. (Emphasis added) And in case you're not familiar with the Con...

Meandering thoughts on ghost stories and the paranormal/paranatural Part 1

Trigger Warning: This one meanders a bit and is long. I found myself meandering much longer than I initially expected as I let myself think "aloud" about these things. For the sake of simplicity I lump all stories of the paranormal/natural together as a ghost story. This includes faeries, demons, ghosts and everything else. It's just easier that way for me. I discuss my thoughts on ghost story comments, similarities in stories and then share a couple short experiences I've had. There is mockery as well as sarcasm. There is a little thoughtful exposition and a lot of "hmmm". If you can't handle scary stories, then skip this one. I know some people don't like them, and I don't want to cause nightmares. This is part one. Part Two, tomorrow. I've said it before, I love a good ghost story. Every where I've lived I've sought out the stories that happened "just over there, in that building". I love hearing people's exp...

Friendships, they live and they die

I've been kicking this one around for months. It's hard to explain exactly, but this one blog post is one of the reasons I actually put together a new blog, instead of wiping my old one and starting that one over. I wanted a clean slate, sure-- I also wanted the ability to be honest and open in a way I couldn't be with the old blog. That blog was primarily analysis, my opinions and stuff I researched-- not my inner person. This one, well, it's me in every weird, confetti filled, kaleidoscope kind of way. I don't have a lot of friends. I have an ass load of “friendly acquaintances” and maybe a couple dozen people I consider to be friends. Fewer than a dozen people, including my husband, I consider close friends. Wow, that sounds like a lot of people, until you realise that my husband is my very best friend, as is my dearest friend Matthew (hi Matt!)-- who lives in Virginia. I count myself lucky as hell to have two people I can count as best friends, two diffe...
