What health care will you let me choose for you?

Warning: This blog is ranty, it contains sarcasm, anger and profanity. It discusses abortion rights. If you can't handle that, this one isn't for you. So, I’ve been thinking about this for a few weeks now. It started with the Ohio and Missouri heart-beat bills, compounded with the travesty coming out of Alabama, and came to a boil with Georgia’s “Hold my beer” bill. Each of these, and mind you this isn’t all of them, are bills that specifically ban abortion care. Each of these is couched as a way to “protect babies”, but treats women like an afterthought—if they think of us, at all! We have been reduced to incubators, to hosts, to objects. And to say I’m angry, or pissed, is probably the understatement of the century. [NB: You can see an article here , discussing all abortion bills that have passed, or are being taken up, on state level. Not all of them ban it. Some actually protect it. For your edification.] I read “The Handmaid’s Tale” when I was a kid. I had t...

Meandering on Missionaries

Warning: This one meanders, a lot! It might be really boring, or confusing if you're not well-versed in the minutia of evangelical Christianity and their reverence for pastors. I'm sorry, I tried to make it as clear as I could, but some things you just have to be exposed to, to fully understand. I hope this blog isn't terribly rambling and boring. It's also kinda snarky, but that isn't much of a surprise, I'm sure.   So, I woke up this morning with the usual fog in my head. I'm not a morning person, much more of a night owl, and so waking up is not a strong point for me-- unless I'm waking up naturally, at which point it's probably 10ish, so my brains are much more amenable to the whole "thinking" thing that they are supposed to do. This morning, though, and I mean Right Now, my brains are still not awake-- they just have the weirdest thoughts thinking in there. I must have dreamt about it, but I don't remember. [So, thank the dig...

Rape, is rape. It's all legitimate, and it's all forced.

Trigger Warning: This blog deals with rape, a politicians attempt at rape apology as a reason to outlaw abortion and the idea that only good girls get raped by strangers jumping out at them. Of course it's bullshit, and I treat it as such; however, it might be triggering for some people who have been through a sexual assault. I don't want to cause your healing to stop, or regress, so you might want to skip this one. It meanders a bit, too. Topics like this are hard for me to deal with in a linear way, as they touch on the very core of who and what being female, a woman and human means. I am almost 35 and still trying to figure that out for myself, so I can't expect to be able to explain it properly for anyone else. As always, you can get help from RAINN , SNAP , or the Hotline . You can also Google "rape survivor resources" and find myriad links to people who have been through it, and who want you to come out the other side, too.  I spent the weekend doing ...

Privacy: what's so damned hard about it?

Trigger Warning: I'm going to rant a bit about the right to privacy today. I get a little profane, and I mock the shit out of evangelical/fundamental Christianity. If this bothers you, skip this one. It also meanders a bit and touches on equal protection under the law-- something that often goes hand in hand with the right to privacy. "Although not explicity [sic] stated in the text of the Constitution, in 1890 then to be Justice Louis Brandeis extolled ' a right to be left alone. ' This right has developed into a liberty of personal autonomy protected by the 14th amendment. The 1st , 4th , and 5th Amendments also provide some protection of privacy, although in all cases the right is narrowly defined. The Constitutional right of privacy has developed alongside a statutory right of privacy which limits access to personal information." Cornell University Law School 's page on Privacy. (Emphasis added) And in case you're not familiar with the Con...
