In Memory of Neko, the mouthiest cat I've ever known! (photo heavy)

Friday we brought home our kittens! It was so awesome to see them pour out of the carrier and running through the house. If you look close, I swear you could see confetti and glittery, rainbow trails after them! We were all set to go to the kitten shower at the Hermitage Saturday, and I was going to take photos  and blog about it. Good news is 37 kittens and cats were adopted!   About four am, Saturday morning, my husband got up for some water. A little while later he woke me up, as our beloved Neko was in distress! She was laying in the middle of the floor, and crying... we thought she was blind. We spent about an hour with her, calming her down, and then helped her tuck herself into a corner by the bookshelf where she felt safe. We took her to the vet as soon as urgent care hours opened which was one pm. The place was already a mad-house. While the tech, S., examined her, Neko's distress got worse, and we all knew something was wrong with our baby. Soon, I was c...

Thanks for the memories, Willy (photo heavy)

All our cats are rescues. My husband adopted Neko from a litter of kittens who's mother had died. She's a bit cranky, and one of those "one person" cats. I'm lucky she likes me, too. She's the most talkative cat I've ever been around; she talks all the time-- like a 13 year old! Boo meandered up to my Dad's old place, a kitten with a broken tail, eating large grasshoppers. She was so cute that my family kept her, and I inherited her a few years later. Given that she was left on the side of the road as a kitten, and that she'd been hurts, I think she might have some brain damage, but she's a cute cat, anyway. Today, though I want to talk about Willy. He was originally adopted by an ex of a friend, of my husband's. She had him for a little while, and then decided that he wasn't cute any more. I think she's blind as fuck. Then my partner's friend, and old room-mate adopted him. Willy was a shy, skittish cat, with long blac...

I am so sorry... but words are hollow, aren't they?

Image
Rather than the planned blog, I'm just going to share this photo and say that I am so sorry. I know words don't mean shit. I know I can't undo, fix, or make any of it better. I know I am lucky, and I am thankful for that, every day. I also know that I'm devastated and cry with the families in Newtown, Connecticut. If I could, I'd undo last Friday in an instant-- and I know I'm not alone. I wish we didn't have these conversations. I wish this sort of thing was a plot line of a horror movie, or a best-selling thriller novel. the fact that school massacres happen in the US is unconscionable. I know words fail. I wish they healed instead. I wish I had more words. I'm just so, so sorry Photo from the HRC you can see it at www.hrc.org

September 11: I remember.

Image
Photo Credit: Wikicommons: multicoloured candles I remember where I was when the first plane hit. I was getting petrol. I was on my way to work, and stopped into a little station in Lawrence Michigan. As I waited in line to pay, for once I was using cash, I looked up to the little television behind her counter. Boom! Everyone in there stopped talking, there must have been half a dozen, it's a busy place first thing in the morning. We just looked at each other. Staring with instantly hollowed eyes. "What a horrible accident!" We all said. Oh My god, how terrible! I telephoned home, "Turn on the television! There was an accident, a plane hit the Trade Centre!" I stayed on the line, listening to my very groggy mother telling me what the guy on MSNBC said, listening with my other ear to NPR. I drove to work. Just as I got onto the freeway, my mother and the DJ said, in a strange chorus, "No, not another one! They crashed into the other tower!...

Sikh Temples and Tucson's Federal Court

Image
The Sikh Khanda Sunday morning a christianist, a white supremacist with bad taste in band names, shot up a car park and then walked into a Wisconsin Sikh gurdwara , or temple. He killed six people, and wounded four more before he was killed by the responding police. His name was Wade Michael Page, and he was a terrorist. **Update: The FBI has released a statement that says Page shot himself in the temple, rather than being shot by police responders. I'm sorry for posting the information incorrectly; I will always attempt to update with corrections.** I have tried to sit down and write about this since it happened. It's Wednesday now, and I still can't wrap my head around the whole thing. I imagine that the victims and their families are going through that, but a million times worse. Who in their right mind would want to harm a Sikh ?! It's like wanting to murder Amish people, or kidnap and pimp out Vestal virgins! I mean, really! Sikhism is an egalitarian rel...

Sorrow for the Aurora, Colorado shooting victims.

Image
In Remembrance... Friday morning, I woke up, expecting it to be a normal Friday. Instead I was confronted with news splashed across cyberspace and in real-time about a shooting in Colorado. I was full of sorrow for the victims, and their families. Those who were lost, and those who were wounded have my deepest, most heart-felt thoughts and sadness. I know I can't undo it. I know I can't bring anyone back, or heal anyone's hurt. I know this, and yet I wish so badly that I could. I know I'm not the only person who feels that way. Because I can't, let me just hold my little light in the blog-osphere, and add my wishes for a quick recovery for those who were injured. My small condolences don't mean much to those who are in the middle of this mess-- but I am human, and I care, and I can't help but add them.
